Background

At the third stage of the oratorio Solomon, the Queen of Sheba (in East Africa, where is now Eritrea, Somalia, Ethiopia and Yemen) arrived in Israel to visit King Solomon, as she looks up to Solomon's wealth and wisdom so much. She brought gold and jewels to Israel and left satisfied, when Solomon gave her "all her desired, whatsoever she asked".

There is a rumor in Ethiopian accounts that Solomon seduced the Queen and impregnanted her. The Ethiopian people thus believe that the visit of the Queen is not only important in culture and politics, but also brings offspring of Solomon to Ethiopian.

There is another rumor that it was the son of Solomon and Queen of Sheba, Menelik I, who left Israel with a Ark of the Covenant. The Claim of such a lineage and of possession of the Ark has been an important source of legitimacy and prestige for the Ethiopian monarchy throughout the many centuries of its existence, and had important and lasting effects on Ethiopian culture as a whole. The Ethiopian government and church deny all requests to view the alleged ark.

Compositor
George Frederic Handel, a German born Baroque Musician, is most famous for his master piece Messiah; Water Music; and Music for the Royal Fireworks. His music was known to famous musicians after him, including Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Handel's talent convinced the monarch of Britain in his early career, and his fame spread across Europe. In his later half of life his career dropped down (still much better than other musicians like Bach though), and he started to be converted to Christian and wrote several great oratorio.

Form and Instruments
This piece of music is referred as a sinfonia in the opera. (There is interesting discussion on the exact meaning of the word "sinfonia" in wiki, which I don't really understand :P) Anyway, two oboes, two violins, a viola as well as bassi performs in this piece of music and help to set up a grand mood in the music. (need a more elaborated way to explain why.)
